This section describes the SMART shared library service, and how it extends the Porirua Library service.
Porirua is now part of the SMART library collaboration (Porirua, Hutt City, Kapiti, Wellington Institiute of Technology (WelTec), and Whitireia Libraries). This collaborative library network gives access to over 500,000 items across 6 library systems.
To use the SMART service you must change your Porirua Library Card to a SMART Card. Speak with one of our librarians if you wish to have your card changed.
Search the SMART catalogue for all six libraries here.
You can return books borrowed from a SMART library to any library in the SMART system for no charge. This includes branch libraries.
As these items are in high demand and rely on being current, the library needs to be able to keep them circulating rapidly.
As of October 2011 magazines cannot be renewed (the issue period remains at 14 days).
Library Card barcodes
To make sure our barcodes are not duplicated we have added the "D" character from the end of the code to the stored number, so if you are used to logging in with only the middle group of numbers you will need to make sure you include ALL of the barcode numbers.
There is now no charge for reservations; if you change to a SMART card you have the option to reserve items from all of the SMART libraries. Please note, however, that normal charges for each SMART library will apply to DVDs and CDs: go to SMART charges.
Reservations on your Libraries Catalogue
The number of reserves now showing on the catalogue for a particular item is for all six SMART libraries. Rest assured your queue position hasn't changed at your local library.
Our regional service is now operating. If you have any questions, contact your library by email or phone.
