This page describes the Porirua Genealogy Research Centre at Porirua Library which was established in the late 1980s. Since then, it has grown to become known as a friendly area, with a comprehensive collection of materials for family research.
It occupies a significant space in the Library near the reference collections, which include the Local History and Maori and Pacific collections, all of which can be utilised to further your research.
The Centre holds a comprehensive range of material suitable for family history research with a focus on New Zealand and British information. This includes microfiche, microfilm, books, magazines and a growing range of CD ROMs.
We also hold a selection of materials that will enable you to get a good grounding in Maori whakapapa research and we can offer you guidance for Pacific Island research.
These may be viewed using one of the fiche readers, computers or the Library's microfilm scanner. The scanner is a Cannon Microfilm Scanner 500, which will allow you to easily read and copy microfilm and microfiche either to a printer or a floppy disc. Microfilm may be interloaned through the Porirua Library from the National Library for $5.00.
The Centre is available for research during normal Library hours, and is generally staffed by volunteer genealogists who can offer help and advice. Check the Porirua Branch of the NZ Society of Genealogists website for more information.
The service is available free to anyone, regardless of whether they live locally or not.
